Live Music!
Even though I have lived in Central Texas a year and a half, I have never been to Austin. I sensed that I was missing out on something. Austin is the "Live Music Capital" of the world or so I am told. It has always been a pleasant thought of mine to go down to the city for a live concert. I am not as savvy as I would like to be when it comes to music, but I like music a lot. You can tell several things about a person by the music that he/she listens to.
When my friend left a message on my phone, asking me to go with him to a concert in Austin last night, I jumped at the chance. It didn't matter to me that I was not feeling 100% well. It also didn't matter that I had never heard of the musician we were going to hear. What mattered is that we were heading to Austin for a live concert in some small, smoke filled bar. I am always up for a new adventure. It turned out that I felt much better as the evening went on and I really enjoyed the music.
The guy we heard was Bill Mallonee, former singer of the band Vigilantes of Love (I have heard of them before). His music is in the category of folk rock. He writes his songs out of his own life. He told stories of people and places. Some songs brought a smile to my face and other songs brought a tear. It is true to life.
How beautiful it is to be able to express oneself through music. It truly is an invention of God!
